Project 3 Pitch

Anxiety in College Students

My Pitch

As found by my research and my interview with a univeristy counselor here at FSU, anxiety is the #1 reason students seek counseling.

College freshmen especially experience unusually high levels of stressors in their transition to college life. While college creates a totally new environment for students, with more freedom than ever before, the change can be a stressful one.

According to Healthline.com, about 18% of the total US population has some form of anxiety, and multiple studies have found these numbers to be even higher in the college population, making this a relevant topic, given that about 1 out of every 5 people in this room will have anxiety at some point this year.

The Problem

Only about 40% of people get diagnosed for their anxiety, meaning that the majority of people do not get treatment for the disorder. This is a problem, since the higher number of anxious and stressed out students means that there are even more college kids not getting the help they need.

What's the solution?

I created two accompanying genres for this project,

a webpage and a Buzzfeed article.

The purpose of the webpage is to act as a resource that could be available from the University Counseling Center's website for students here on campus who are either seeking treatment for their stress or anxiety or are trying to learn more about resources available to them.

The Buzzfeed article presents commonly stressful situations to freshmen college students and underlines reasons that college students are more prone to stress and anxiety.
